About the Author

Mary Alice Baumgardner

Mary Alice Baumgardner is a graduate of Towson Senior High School, Towson Maryland and Gettysburg College. She began graduate studies in Art in Florence, Italy. In August, 1996, she completed the "Master's with the Masters Program" at Marywood College, receiving an MA in Studio Art, with an emphasis in Children's Book Illustration.

She has taught in elementary school and high school. It was from classroom experiences she began to write children's stories. Her first children's book, Alexandra, Keeper of Dreams, was published in 1993. Her second book, Buzzy Newton's Terrible Discovery, was published in December, 1999.

Her artwork has appeared several times in"Welcome Home" magazine, most recently on the cover of the August 1999 issue.

Mary Alice works in watercolors, prismacolors, graphite, and mixed-media. She enjoys illustrating children's books as well as creating portraits. Her work was exhibited in January 1995 in a one artist show at Penn State University's Mont Alto Campus Gallery. Her work has also been displayed in various area galleries.

Mary Alice and her husband, Allen, have three sons, Matthew, Mark and Michael. Living in the country south of Waynesboro, PA, she takes advantage of opportunities to write and illustrate stories about animals and children.

Mary Alice is a member of The Society of Children's Book Writers and illustrators.
